Snowboarders Safely Led By Rescuers Off Mount Rainier

MT. RANIER, Wash.  (Metro)  -- Two snowboarders who became stranded in a blizzard and spent two nights on Mount Rainier are back in more comfortable confines after being led off the mountain by rescuers.

Twenty-one-year-old Derek Tyndall of Sumner and 20-year-old Thomas Dale of Indiana were caught by the snowstorm Sunday at an elevation of about 7,500 feet as they descended from Camp Muir.

The pair had little food and no overnight gear, but built a snow cave for shelter.
Rescuers spotted the snowboarders around 11:30 a.m. yesterday and gave them warm liquids, then led the pair off the mountain to reunite them with their families.
