County Officials Discuss Location For New Jail

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Whatcom County leaders met this week to discuss a possible location for a new jail.

Sheriff Bill Elfo says the committee assembled to find a site for the new jail has recommended using the corner of Labounty and Sunset Avenue in Ferndale.

Elfo says the site would allow the county to expand the new jail if needed in the future, and would be more accessible for law enforcement officers.

He says a jail at that site would also reduce the number of trips by officers into Downtown Bellingham.

He says they also plan to hold court appearances through a remote video connection to further reduce the amount of time officers spend going to and from the courthouse.

The jail selection committee will present their site recommendation for public comment at the county council meeting on December 4.
