County Council To Decide Rules On Wind Energy Systems

WHATCOM, Wash. -- Developers who want to build large-scale wind energy systems in Whatcom County may finally get the chance soon.

The Whatcom County Council is holding a public hearing and may make a decision tonight on a set of permanent rules for large-scale wind energy systems.

The new rules allow for a range of wind energy systems, with regulations for setbacks, appearance, sound levels, blade height and other specifications.

The council back in may put a temporary halt on accepting new applications for big wind energy projects until the new rules could be approved.

The rules would allow wind generators only in heavy-impact industrial areas near the refineries at Cherry Point.
The county council will hold the public hearing during its regular meeting at 7 p.m. at the Whatcom County Courthouse.
