DOE Urges Land Owners To Fill Abandoned Wells

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Washington Department of Ecology wants to reduce the threat to children and animals from abandoned water wells.

Every year farm animals or pets are injured or die in our state after falling into a well that has not been properly plugged and covered.

There may be thousands of these wells in Washington.

State law requires a licensed well driller to fill an abandoned well with concrete, bentonite clay or grout before covering it up.

Landowners may face legal liability for injuries or groundwater contamination resulting from abandoned wells that are not properly plugged and capped.

You can contact the Department of Ecology for advice and information on locating and plugging abandoned wells by calling 360-407-6648.
