Coal Terminal Opponents Back Down On Coal Dust Issue

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Opponents of the proposed coal shipping terminal at Cherry Point are apparently backing down from earlier statements about the health impacts of coal dust.

Dr. Frank James with the group "Whatcom Docs" admits in a recent article from E & E Publishing that "there are not a lot of consequences of coal dust."

Proponents have said all along that coal dust is a "non-issue."

Northwest Washington Central Labor Council Vice President Chris Johnson says he's never heard of any health issues related to coal dust.

He says the conversation about coal dust was never more than just a scare tactic.

Whatcom Docs, a group of 160 local physicians, originally included coal dust as one of the factors that could threaten people's health if coal-train traffic increases due to the proposed Cherry Point Shipping Terminal.
