Road To Artist Point Closed For The Season

WHATCOM, Wash. -- With snow in the forecast for Mount Baker, crews will be closing the road to Artist Point for the season this morning.

Workers with the state Department of Transportation will close the gate at 7 a.m. just above the Mount Baker ski area.

Dustin Terpening with the DOT says the last three miles of the Mount Baker Highway leading to Artist Point sees some of the most extreme weather conditions.

He says crews have to close the road for the season when the weather changes, because it's unsafe to leave open once the ice and snow move in.

DOT crews opened the road this year on July 24 after clearing snow 20 to 30 feet deep that buried the highway.

Last year, crews were only able to open a small part of the road to artist point because of the snow and ice.
