City, Port Proposing Land Exchange

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The city and port of Bellingham have proposed a property exchange that's expected to improve public access and attract developers to the waterfront.

If approved, the port would swap its 51 percent share of the Cornwall Beach property at the end of Cornwall Avenue for the city's Colony Wharf property on the north end of the Whatcom Waterway.

Rob fix with the port says the swap will allow both entities to make better use of the land.

Mayor Kkelli Linville says she hopes to propose that a public trail be built along the breakwater at Cornwall beach within the next couple of years.

The Port Commission will consider the proposal and hold a public hearing on October 16.

The city council will do the same on October 22.

Linville says they hope to have a plan for the full waterfront redevelopment ready for the planning commission by the first of next year.
