The new "annual measurable objectives" assessment system replaces the "adequate yearly progress" results that were required by the "No Child Left Behind" act.
Cynthia Cecilia with the Ferndale School District says the goal of the new system is to cut students' current proficiency gaps in math and reading in half by 2017.
She says students and parents will also see another new assessment test in about two years.
The state applied to the federal government to get a waiver from the old system's requirement that all students meet 100 percent proficiency in math and reading by 2014.
The new system also will not label schools as passing or failing.
