SSA Marine Shocked By Lummi Nation Opposition

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A spokesman for the company behind the proposed coal-shipping terminal at Cherry Point says they're surprised that the Lummi Nation came out in opposition to the project.

Bob Watters with SSA Marine the company has been working with the Lummi Nation, and has assured that they would respect the tribe's way of life as they move forward with the Gateway Pacific Terminal.

He says the company believes it's possible to develop the terminal without disturbing any archeological or historic sites at Cherry Point.

A vessel traffic study will determine the project's impact on fishing.

Watters says SSA marine's approach will be to minimize impacts, and then mitigate any remaining impacts in a way that satisfies both the company and the tribe.
