OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Washington's 2nd District Representative has introduced a bill that would make it easier for people without a photo I.D. to vote in national elections.
Congressman Rick Larsen says the “America Votes Act of 2012” is meant to push back the wave of new voter I.D. laws passed by states across the country.
He says the laws suppress the rights of minority voters, because actual cases of in person voter fraud are extremely rare.
Instead of showing a government issued photo I.D., the new act would let voters sign an affidavit to prove their identity, similar to our state's mail-in ballot system.
Larsen says the act includes harsh penalties for people who lie on the affidavit.
