Sunken Barge Off Lummi Island Leaks More Oil

LUMMI, ISLAND, Wash. -- The last pieces of a sunken barge off the south end of Lummi Island have begun leaking again.

The barge is one of two sunken barges that were being dismantled back in March.

The Department of Ecology says crews were able to remove one barge from the depths soon after the March 15 spill was discovered.

Removal of the second barge was put on hold for migrating juvenile salmon.

Crews began working on the barge again in mid-August with only occasional sheens on the water.

On Monday, however, crews discovered about five gallons of oil had leaked.

As of yesterday afternoon ecology says oil remained in the water with some escaping the boomed area and some on the shoreline, but it was less widespread than on Monday.

Ecology says it’s unclear what caused the leak.
