Sea Plane Crashes Into Lake Whatcom

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A sea plane practicing landing and takeoff at the south end of Lake Whatcom crashed into the water Friday.

Sgt. Kevin Mede with the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office says the nose of the plane hit a swell on the lake, filling the cockpit with water.

The 76-year-old pilot and his passenger from Anacortes were able to get the plane to the shore. Four teenage boys in a boat then towed the sea plane to the beach.

Nobody was injured. The crash caused about $20,000 of damage to the plane.
