OLYMPIA, Wash. (Metro) -- An element of the federal Affordable Care Act takes effect today, containing provisions primarily covering preventive care services for women.
Many insurance plans, known as "non-grandfathered" plans, are required under the law to provide coverage for and eliminate cost-sharing on certain preventive health services.
They include well-woman visits, screening for gestational diabetes, HPV DNA testing, domestic violence screening and counseling, HIV screening, contraceptives, and family planning counseling.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates more than 1.9 million women in Washington will be able to receive the preventive services under the Affordable Care Act.
