Amazon Founder Donates Millions To Back Gay Marriage

SEATTLE, Wash. (Metro)  -- Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is opening his wallet wide to support gay marriage.

With his wife, Bezos has pledged two-point-five-million dollars toward the effort to pass a same-sex marriage referendum in Washington state.

The referendum would affirm a marriage equality law passed by elected officials there.

A statement on the website of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation says Bezos was moved to make the donation after a woman who worked with him when Amazon was in its infancy e-mailed to ask him for support.

His e-mail response and multi-million-dollar pledge said "this is right for so many reasons."

Microsoft executives Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have also backed passage of the referendum.
