State DOT Opens Road To Artist Point

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. --  The State Department of Transportation will open the road to Artist Point on Mt. Baker, Tuesday.

The three mile road at the end of the Mt. Baker highway didn't open last year due to late spring snow.

Dustin Terpening with the DOT says the snow at artist point was very deep again this year.

He says the snow measured as deep as 30 ft. in the upper parking lot before the clearing started.

Crews cleared the road up to the heather meadows visitor center on Friday.

Artist point is a popular hiking destination with panoramic views of mount Shuksan and Mt. Baker.
