BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The state’s budget director says Western Washington University’s salary increases have hurt its credibility.



Marty Brown says though the government can’t do anything about the salary increases and the resulting spike in tuition meant to cover them, legislators can review the decision.

He says in the upcoming budget, the governor and legislators may decide to take some of the school’s general fund money away.

Western’s president and board of trustees told alumni the raises are needed to keep the school competitive.

Brown says many agencies feel the same, but are not increasing salaries across the board.
