Navy Vet Comes To Rescue Of Two Girls At Hood Canal

POULSBO, Wash.  (Metro)  -- Two 12-year-old girls owe their lives to a retired Navy diver who helped rescue them from Hood Canal Saturday.

KING 5 News reports Jerry Schumacher lives near the canal where the tide came in and swept the girls into the canal as they walked on the beach.

A neighbor heard them screaming and dialed 911, while Schumacher put on his dry suit, grabbed two life vests and swam out to them.

Arriving firefighters borrowed a neighbor's boat and plucked all three from the water.
