Carrie Underwood comes out in support of gay marriage

Country sensation Carrie Underwood has voiced her support of the legalisation of gay marriage in the U.S.

The former American Idol champion, who is a devout Christian, insists her own marriage to hockey player Mike Fisher has made her believe all American citizens should be allowed to marry who they want.

She tells The Independent newspaper, "As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry.

"I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."

Underwood reveals her non-denominational church accepts both gay and straight worshippers, insisting it's not a Christian's place to judge.

She adds, "Our church is gay friendly. Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or (saying) 'everyone has to be like me'. No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."

President Barack Obama endorsed same-sex marriage across America last month, receiving praise from stars like Mia Farrow, former supermodel Tyra Banks and lesbians Ellen DeGeneres and Chely Wright. (MJ/U/KL)
