Centralia Death Calls New Attention To Child Abuse

CENTRALIA, Wash. (Metro)  -- The violent death of a two-year-old Centralia girl last week has some saying more must be done to keep Washington children safe.

Michael Petit, the executive director at the nonprofit group Every Child Matters, says a bill in Congress would convene an expert panel.

Washington Congressman Jim McDermott is co-sponsoring that bill.

Police are holding a 25-year-old man in the Centralia case.

Petit says child abuse is to the point of needing attention in this fall's Presidential election.

Federal records say 104 Washington children died from abuse and neglect between 2006 and 2010.
