Country singer George Jones is recovering at home after he was released from hospital this week.

The veteran music star has been fighting an upper respiratory infection since March and was readmitted to a medical centre in Tennessee on Monday after he failed to shake off the illness.

He spent several days under the care of doctors before he was released to continue his recovery at home, and the star insists he is battling back to full fitness.

He says in a statement, "I can't thank my friends and fans enough for all their support. (My wife) Nancy has got me a new team of doctors to help me get through this, and it seems to be working. I look forward to seeing everyone soon."

Jones, 80, was forced to scrap a number of concerts due to his ill health and has cancelled all his upcoming shows until the end of June
