NEW YORK (AP) — The space shuttle Enterprise has reopened to visitors after an 8-month hiatus caused by damage from Superstorm Sandy.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday on the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum to unveil the temporary pavilion housing NASA’s retired shuttle.

More than 400 guests watched as the shuttle was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It’s the first space shuttle to receive the designation.

The inflatable structure that had housed the Enterprise was deflated during Sandy. High water levels caused a shutdown of the floating museum’s main power supply and backup generators.

The newly built structure is a steel-framed pavilion designed to withstand much harsher conditions. It is unclear how long the shuttle will remain housed there.
