LUMMI NATION (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Volunteers and numerous agencies sprang into action to rescue a man reported missing in the Nooksack Slough near Lummi Shore Road.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office reports that the man was missing for about 24 hours when the report came in Monday, Sept. 9.

Two volunteer teams with a dog set out to locate the man and the Bellingham Police Department deployed a drone in the search. The drone had a loudspeaker that called out to the man, who responded and helped direct rescuers to his location.

Crews waded through waist-deep water and thick brush to reach the man who had been without food or water for over 30 hours.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter responded and hoisted the man out and to the hospital in Bellingham. Lummi Police and the Bellingham Fire Department also assisted in the rescue.
