BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Only minor injuries were reported after a series of accidents shut down I-5 northbound in Bellingham.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding says that two separate crashes occurred near Lakeway Drive at around 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 4.

One of the accidents involved three vehicles, which Trooper Harding said was handled by another law enforcement agency. The other accident was caused by a semi-truck, whose load shifted forward into the cab of the truck during the crash and trapped the driver inside.

The driver was extracted and transported to Peacehealth St. Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three other cars were involved in that accident and only one person had minor injuries.

The Washington Department of Transportation shut down both lanes of the interstate until the early morning hours of Sept. 5 in order to tow the damaged semi-truck off the road.

WSP Trooper Harding said that the delay in reopening the freeway was due to the damaged cab not being able to fit under the overpass.

Both lanes reopened just before 2 a.m. on Thursday.
