FERNDALE, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A family of four was hospitalized following a car fire near Ferndale on New Year’s Day.

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Chief of Medical Services Scott Painter says firefighters were called to the incident on Portal Way around 3:30 pm on Jan. 1.

He says a car had gone off a ditch and became fully engulfed in flames. A family of four inside the car—two adults and two children—were able to escape the car on their own.

They were transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in stable condition. A section of Portal Way was closed for roughly an hour during the response.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though Painter says most of the damage was done to the car’s engine.
