$27 million for cursive writing?

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Handwriting counts – at least in South Carolina.

A state Senate panel has narrowly advanced a bill requiring that students be taught how to write in script. The measure would mandate cursive instruction by the fifth grade.

But some lawmakers questioned the more than $27 million price tag for materials and teacher training.

One lawmaker says every elementary school teacher should know how to write in cursive, and students only need a pad of paper. South Carolina hasn’t required cursive teaching since 2008.
