WWU track & field posts strong peformances at Doris Heritage Track Festival

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University track & field program continued the outdoor season on Saturday with a trio of Vikings improving upon previous NCAA Division II provisional-qualifying performances and three more Vikings adding program top-10 marks at the Seattle Pacific University Doris Heritage Track Festival, held at West Seattle Stadium with pole vaulters competing at the University of Washington’s Husky Track.
After a weekend off from competition last week, WWU returned to action on Saturday with the third outdoor meet of the year. Sophomore Raquel Pellecer (Sandy, WA/Portland State) and freshman Natalie Vetto (Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington) each recorded personal-best and provisional-qualifying javelin marks while senior Anna Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) improved upon her season-best in the pole vault with a provisional-qualifying mark.
Junior Tupre Wickliff (Vancouver, WA/Evergreen/Clark College) added a program top-10 mark in the high jump while junior Rachael Roberts (Woodinville, WA/Bellevue College) posted a program top-10 in the pole vault and sophomore Sophia Galvez (Los Alamos, NM) recorded a program top-10 mark in the 10,000m.
Paradee entered the day with a provisional-qualifying height of 3.75m (12-3 ½) that was recorded at the season-opening University of Puget Sound Ed Boitano Invitational and listed 2nd-best among NCAA Division II competitors nationally. She improved upon her previous season best with a mark of 3.82m (12-6 ¼) on Saturday to place 2nd in the pole vault and lead six Vikings in the event. Her effort is the top mark in Division II as of Saturday.
Roberts added a program top-10 mark with a personal-best height of 3.52m (11-6 ½) in 7th place to rank 8th on the WWU top-10 list. Sophomore Jewels Oliquiano (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) was 6th at the same height of 3.52m (11-6 ½).
Pellecer, a two-time GNAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week during the season, won the javelin event for the third time in as many meets this year with a provisional-qualifying throw of 45.14m (148-1). Her effort bettered her previous personal-best and provisional-qualifying mark of 45.00m (147-8), which ranked No. 4 nationally entering the day and was set at the Pacific Lutheran University Open.
Vetto also improved upon her previous personal-best and provisional-qualifying effort with a throw of 43.62m (143-1) to place 2nd. The previous personal-best for Vetto was 43.42m (142-5 ¼), ranking No. 10 nationally and set at the season-opening University of Puget Sound Ed Boitano Invitational. Freshman Hannah Nienaber (Battle Ground, WA/Prairie) followed in 4th place with a throw of 36.73m (120-6) on Saturday.
Wickliff, recently named the GNAC Male Newcomer of the Year for the indoor season, posted a personal best to win the high jump on Saturday with a leap of 2.03m (6-8). The mark ranks in a six-way tie for 9th on the WWU top-10 list. Freshman Seren Dances (Port Townsend, WA) cleared 1.78m (5-10) as the two Vikings were the only competitors in the event.
Sophomore Sophia Galvez (Los Alamos, NM) ran a personal-best time in the 10,000m, finishing in 37:21.71 for the No. 6 time on the WWU top-10 list.
Also on the women’s side, sophomore Waverly Shreffler (Sequim, WA) placed 1st of seven in the 800m with a winning time of 2:27.18.
Sophomore Aundrea Koger (Osage City, KS) led three Vikings in the 1,500m with a time of 4:53.76 to place 7th among a field of 20 racers. Shreffler followed in 10th (5:00.78) while freshman Talia Dreicer(Los Alamos, NM) finished in 11th (5:02.69).
Junior Tracy Melville (Lamont, WA/Lind-Ritzville/Sprague) led a 1-2-3 finish for WWU in the 5,000m with a time of 18:09.41, followed by sophomore Peyton Shinnick (Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma) in 2nd (18:27.71) and freshman Tovah Swartz-Ireland (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) in 3rd (18:33.79).
Sophomore Chanelle Eddy (Bellingham, WA/Sehome/Whitworth) finished 2nd in the shot put (10.67m, 35-0 ¼) and freshman Kiana Schwendeman (Bonney Lake, WA) was 4th (8.56m, 28-1). Schwendeman placed 3rd in the hammer throw with a mark of 41.63m (136-7) and Eddy was 5th (37.91m, 124-4).
Junior Malea Munoz (Kent, WA/Kentwood) placed 5th in the triple jump with a leap of 4.90m (16-1) while junior Bridget Henry (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) tied for 4th in the high jump at a height of 1.48m (4-10 ¼).
For the men, the 4x400m relay team composed of junior Reid Lovercamp (Wenatchee, WA), juniorStedman Knox (Bothell, WA/Cedar Park Christian), junior Kyler Sager (Snohomish, WA/Everett CC), and sophomore Enrique Gomez (Seattle, WA/Franklin) placed 1st of five with a winning time of 3:30.46.
Dances led a 1-2 finish for WWU in the 100m with a time of 11.83, followed by Knox in 2nd (11.92). Knox also finished 3rd in the 200m with a time of 23.85.
In the 400m, Lovercamp was 2nd (50.91) and followed by Sager in 3rd with a time of 51.27.
Junior James Jasperson (Lacey, WA/North Thurston/Everett CC) was the top placer of six Vikings in the 1,500m with a time of 3:59.76 to place 3rd. Also among the top five was junior Isaac Derline (Kent, WA/Kentridge) in 4th with a time of 4:04.93.
Freshmen Ian Fay (Duvall, WA/Cedarcrest) and Jackson McIlroy (Twain Harte, CA/Sonora), running as the only two racers in the 3,000m steeplechase, finished in times of 9:32.99 (Fay) and 9:52.40 (McIlroy).
Sophomore Edward Kiolbasa (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area/North Dakota) led WWU in the 5,000m, placing 2nd in a time of 15:16.46. He was followed by freshmen Bentley Wilson (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor) in 3rd (15:27.35) and Kevin Mullin (Arlington, WA) in 4th (15:49.86). Freshman Nick Siegfried (Renton, WA/Liberty) placed 5th in the 10,000m with a time of 35:03.51.
Dances also placed 1st in the long jump with a leap of 6.93m (22-9) to post the top mark of four Vikings in the event. He was followed by senior Somit Chhim (Kelso, WA) with a mark of 6.67m (21-10 ¾) in 2nd, freshman Cyrus McAllister (Shoreline, WA) in 3rd (6.40m, 21-0) and junior Jacob Ringold (Vancouver, WA/Columbia River) in 5th (6.18m, 20-3 ½). Ringold was also 2nd of two competitors in the triple jump with a leap of 12.81m (42-0 ½).
Freshman Cooper McNatt (Camas, WA) took top honors in the javelin with a throw of 55.29m (181-5) and freshman Mason Salley (Bremerton, WA/Central Kitsap) followed in 3rd with a mark of 51.85m (170-1).
Freshman Avery Lux (Fort Collins, CO/Fossil Ridge) placed 2nd in the hammer throw (49.76m, 163-3) while senior Adam Thomas (Washougal, WA) finished 5th in the pole vault at a height of 4.60m (15-1).
WWU is scheduled to compete in four locations over a two-day span next Friday and Saturday. The Vikings will be in action San Francisco State Distance Carnival (March 30-31, Hayward, CA), Stanford Invitational (March 30-31, Stanford, CA) UBC Open (March 30-31, Vancouver, BC) and UPS Shotwell Invitational (March 31, Tacoma, WA).
