WWU opens competition at UW Invitational on Friday


SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University track & field program opened the two-day UW Invitational by recording five indoor season program top-10 marks at Dempsey Indoor on Friday as the Vikings competed in nine events held during the meet’s first day.

Friday’s competition featured Vikings competing in the 200m, 3,000m, 5,000m, distance medley relay and pole vault.

On the women’s side, sophomore Sophia Galvez (Los Alamos, NM) placed 35th in the 5,000m with a program top-10 time of 17:48.71, bettering her previous personal best of 18:26.87 set in 2017 to move from 9th to 6th on the top-10 list. Senior Alexandra Laiblin (Oak Harbor, WA) followed in 54th with a time of 18:32.62. Laiblin’s personal-best time of 18:24.47 ranks 9th on the top-10 list.

In the men’s 5,000m sophomores Eric Hamel (Enumclaw, WA) and Jadon Olson (Mill Creek WA, Henry M. Jackson) each recorded program top-10 times. Hamel finished 27th (14:56.19) and Olson followed closely in 28th (14:57.59) while freshman Ben Jacot (Tacoma, WA/Curtis) was 33rd (15:01.10) and junior Dylan Hayes (Seattle, WA/Garfield) was 38th (15:09.43). Hamel’s time ranks 7th on the WWU top-10 list while Olson’s is 8th.

Both distance medley relay teams posted the 10th-fastest time on their respective WWU top-10 lists during Friday’s races.

The WWU women’s distance medley team, composed of freshman Jane Barr (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt), senior Deja Svastisalee (Spokane, WA/North Central), freshman Shawnee Konrad (Mead, WA/Mount Spokane) and sophomore Aundrea Koger (Osage City, KS) finished 20th with a time of 12:32.06.

The WWU men’s distance medley “A” team of freshman Porter McMichael (Richland, WA/Hanford), freshman Myles Smith (Puyallup, WA), freshman Macauley Franks (Lake Forest Park, WA/Shorecrest) and freshman Ian Fay (Duvall, WA/Cedarcrest) finished 13th in a time of 10:32.99. WWU’s “B” team followed in 16th with a time of 10:52.95.

Sophomore Emily Sytsma (Lynden, WA/Concordia) led six Vikings in the women’s 200m with a time of 26.29 (53rd) while freshman Bryant Welch (Burien, WA/Mount Rainier) was the top placer among seven Vikings in the men’s 200m in a time of 22.67 (18th).

Junior Rachael Roberts (Woodinville, WA/Bellevue College) tied for 14th (as of Friday’s flight) with a height of 3.33m (10-11) in the women’s pole vault to lead six Vikings in the event, while junior J.T. Konrad (Mead, WA/Mount Spokane) was the top placer among three Vikings in Friday’s men’s pole vault flight, finishing 5th at a height of 4.48m (14-8 ¼). Junior Tracy Melville (Lamont, WA/Lind-Ritzville/Sprague) placed 15th in Friday’s heat of the 3,000m with a time of 10:38.48.

The Vikings continue competition at the UW Invitational on Saturday, with running events beginning at 9 am and field events set to get underway at 10 am. The meet features live results as well as a FloTrack live stream (subscription required for stream).

Dempsey Indoor Track:

The Dempsey indoor facility is a 307-meter Mondo track with a six lane straightaway, and a five-lane oval. For the field the Dempsey has two 160 ft. elevated wooden long jump runways (132 ft. TJ) with Mondo overlay; two 150 ft. elevated wooden pole vault runways with Mondo overlay; two 80 ft. right/left wooden high jump approach areas with Mondo overlay; two reinforced wooden throwing rings.
