BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A former Western Washington University athletic great has passed away.
Fred Emerson was 82.
Western calls Emerson one of the greatest athletes to ever compete there as a standout football and baseball player in the late 50’s.
He was the Viking Athlete of the Year in 1957, and the school inducted him into their Athletics Hall of Fame in 1976.
Emerson suffered two serious knee injuries while at Western, so he became a high school football coach after graduating and helped his alma mater win the northern division crown in ’64 and ’65.
