BARCELONA, Spain – A group of Whatcom County soccer players and their parents narrowly avoided last week’s terror attack.

Former KGMI reporter Cara Buckingham was in Spain with her son’s Rangers soccer team.

The group of 14 players, a coach and family members arrived in the city August 12th. They had been frequenting the area where the attack occurred, Buckingham said.

“It was right in that square that we would be gathering to depart for whatever adventures we had that day, or to gather on the metro to our hotel” Buckingham said.

The group was scheduled to be in the area at the time of the attack, Buckingham said. But their planned tour changed, saving them.

None of the group was hurt, and the team has been spending time outside of the city since the attack.
