BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 2-ranked and undefeated Western Washington University women’s soccer team scored just 22 seconds into the game and never looked back in an 6-0 victory over in-state rival Central Washington on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Harrington Field.

Junior forward
Gabriela Pelogi (Federal Way, WA) recorded her second hat trick of the season, scoring the quick goal in the first half and adding two second-half scores to give her a league-leading 13 goals on the season.

With their 11th shutout of the season and seventh straight, the Vikings extended their perfect season to 14-0-0 and remain in first place in the GNAC at 10-0-0 overall. The victory also extended WWU’s winning streak to 38 consecutive games, moving into a tie for the school record set from 1982-84. The 38-game winning streak (4th-best in NCAA II history) and 39-game undefeated streak (38-0-1) dates back to the start of the 2016 national championship season.

“I thought this was one of our best performances of the season, top to bottom,” said head coachTravis Connell. “We got that quick goal that we are always looking for and then kept the pressure on and had some great goals in the second half.”
WWU took the early lead on Pelogi’s first goal of the game 22 seconds into the match. Sophomore defender Lindsey Fujiwara (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) threaded a long pass down the left side to junior forward Karli White (North Bend, WA/Mount Si/Seattle U.) on the goal line, who crossed to Pelogi for the finish to the far post for her 11th goal of the season.
Freshman forward Sophie Butterfield (Bellevue, WA) headed home the Vikings second goal in the 21st minute to extend the lead to 2-0. White recorded her second assist of the game when she delivered a long cross to Butterfield, where she looped a header over the CWU keeper for her third goal of the season.
Freshman Talia Daigle (Edmonds, WA/Archbishop Murphy) scored with less than two minutes remaining in the half, finishing from close range after a shot by Zoe Milburn (Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma) hit the post.
The scoring continued early in the second half when senior midfielder Emily Webster (Bellingham, WA/Sehome) successfully converted a penalty kick in the 49th minute.

Pelogi
would then add two more goals, in the 76th and 86th minutes, to complete the hat trick and give the Vikings the 6-0 victory. She also recorded a hat trick in the second game of the season Sept. 2 at Holy Names. Her 13 goals this season set a single-season high in her three-year career, bettering the 11 goals she scored during the 2016 championship season. With 34 career goals, moving into 6th place in the WWU record books.
The Vikings stingy defense allowed just 5 shots by Central in the game and only one on goal. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA/College of Saint Rose) played 59:42 in goal and sophomoreHillary O’Connor completed the win with one save in 30:18. Homer has now not allowed a goal in 989:21, extending her school and GNAC single-season record.
“This win means a lot because there is so much history in our soccer program and our athletic program,” added Connell on tying the school-record winning streak. “The soccer teams in the 80s were dominant and really set the table for our program to succeed and has helped us understand what it takes to be excellent.”
Central Washington drops to 1-11-3 overall and 0-8-2 in GNAC play. Jordan Engman recorded the Wildcats lone shot on goal that was saved by O’Connor in the 72nd minute. CWU goalkeeper Emily Holt, the GNAC leader in saves entering the game, left the game in the 25th minute with an injury.
The Vikings (14-0-0, 10-0-0 GNAC) finish the regular season next week traveling to play Northwest Nazarene on Thursday (3:30 pm MT/2:30 pm PT) and host Concordia on Saturday for senior day at 1 pm at Harrington Field. The Vikings have already secured a spot in the GNAC Championships that will be played Nov. 2-4 in Portland, Ore.
