TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Washington University softball team went 1-1 during the final day of the 17th Annual Tournament of Champions on Sunday and Pedretti Park, dropping a 4-0 game to Academy of Art and picking up a 1-0 win over Cal State East Bay.

WWU moves to 10-19 on the season and finished the Tournament of Champions with a 2-4 record.

After getting shut out vs. a tough Academy of Art (24-11) team in the opening game of the day, Western rebounded with the 1-0 victory over Cal State East Bay to close out the tournament.

Freshman starting pitcher Kira Doan (Brier, WA/Mountlake Terrace) recorded a 2-hit shutout vs. the Pioneers for her first collegiate victory, while classmate Lauren Lo (Issaquah, WA/Skyline) was the hitting hero with a run-scoring double in the top of the 7th inning that plated the game-winning run.

Sophomore shortstop Paityn Cyr (Mount Vernon, WA) led the Vikings with 6 hits in the 6-game tournament, batting .300 (6-for-20). Freshman third baseman Sam Silver (Mount Vernon, WA) was 5-for-16 (.313) with 4 RBI and junior pitcher/third baseman Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) batted .294 (5-for-17).

WWU’s pitchers posted a 2.92 ERA during the tournament (16 ER, 38.1 IP) with Doan allowing only 1 run and 4 hits in 9.0 innings.

The Vikings (10-19) remain in the Central Valley to play a non-conference doubleheader against Stanislaus State on Tuesday starting at 3 pm at Warrior Softball Field. WWU will continue its extended spring break road trip and return to Great Northwest Athletic Conference a four-game series at Montana State Billings on Friday and Saturday.
