Trey Drechsel named GNAC men’s basketball player of the week

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior guard Trey Drechsel has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Jan. 8-14, announced Tuesday by the conference office in Portland, Ore.

Drechsel (Woodinville, WA/Cedar Park Christian) helped lead the Vikings to a pair of road victories last week, averaging 15.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Overall, he was 10-for-20 (50.0%) from the field and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

In Tuesday’s 69-54 win at Simon Fraser, Drechsel was limited to 4 points on 2-for-9 shooting, but hauled in a team-high 13 rebounds and dished out 6 assists. He came back with a strong performance in Saturday’s 100-91 victory at Montana State Billings, scoring 26 points on 8-for-11 shooting, also adding 8 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and one block.

For the season, Drechsel is averaging 13.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Among conference leaders he is 15th in scoring, tied for 6th in rebounding, 4th in assists, 5th in free throw percentage (85.1%/57-for-67), tied for 4th in steals and 4th in minutes played (31.8). In eight GNAC contests he is averaging 17.8 points per game (4th in GNAC) and is 2nd in the league averaging 9.3 rebounds per game.

The award is the second GNAC Player of the Week honor for Drechsel this season, also selected Nov. 27-Dec. 3. Teammate Daulton Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) also has been named the GNAC Player of the Week twice this season (Dec. 11-17 & Dec. 25-31).

The Vikings are 13-3 overall and take a current 8-game winning streak into this weekend’s road trip to face the Alaska schools. WWU is in first place in the GNAC with a perfect 8-0 league record and is ranked No. 2 in the D2SIDA West Region Poll.
