BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University men’s basketball junior Trey Drechsel has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 8 team, announced by the organization on Thursday.

Drechsel (Woodinville, WA/Cedar Park Christian) becomes the third WWU player to earn Academic All-District honors, joining Rory Blanche (2011-12) and Chris Mitchell (2013). Earlier this season Drechsel was named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year, becoming the seventh player in program history to earn dual conference academic honors in a career.

Carrying a 3.53 grade point average as a Business Management major, Drechsel was one of five West Region players and the only player from the GNAC to be named to the District 8 Division II Academic team.

In addition to excelling in the classroom, Drechsel is a dynamic force on the court. The junior guard has started all 26 games for the 20-6 Vikings, averaging 14.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Among West Region Division II players, he is amongst the leaders in assists (16th), free throw percentage (8th) and rebounds per game (15th), while ranking in the top 10 in the GNAC scoring (10th), rebounding (6th), assists (T4th), free throw percentage (4th), steals (9th) and minutes per game (4th).

To be eligible for the CoSIDA All-Academic All-America nomination process, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games at the position listed.

The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The CoSIDA Academic All-America separately recognizes honorees in four divisions; NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division.

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot, with the All-America honorees announced in March.

The Vikings (20-6, 15-3 GNAC) head into the final week of the regular season having already locked up a first-round bye in the upcoming GNAC Championships that will be played March 1-3 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage, Alaska. WWU completes the regular season with its annual Oregon road trip facing nationally ranked No. 4 Western Oregon tonight in Monmouth and Concordia on Saturday in Portland.
