SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners have immortalized Ken Griffey Jr. with a bronze statue outside Safeco Field. The club unveiled the statue today.

The statue, featuring the famous Griffey swing,  is in front of the Home Plate entrance to Safeco Field. Mariners senior vice president of communication Randy Adamack says the location was chosen because “the maximum number of people will see it outside”.

After unveiling the statue flanked by former teammates Griffey shared the honor with them. “It’s not just me that did this, it’s these guys behind me,” said Griffey.  “Without those guys pushing me day in and day out, there wouldn’t be this.”

The pose choice was easy after the organization asked other major leaguers about Junior. “We talked to his teammates, we talked to players of today,” said Adamack. “The first thing that comes to mind is the swing.”

Griffey Jr. was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York last July.

The Mariners will celebrate the new statue Friday night when they open up a weekend series versus the Texas Rangers.  The first 45,000 fans through the gates will get mini statue replicas.
