Sherman says NFL players must be willing to strike for bigger paydays

If NFL players want bigger guaranteed contracts they better be willing to strike. According to ESPN.com, that’s the word from Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.

During an appearance Wednesday on The ESPY’s Red Carpet show, Sherman was asked if NFL players would have to consider striking to get similar deals to their NBA counterparts. He said, “Oh, 100 percent.”

“If we want as the NFL, as a union, to get anything done, players have to be willing to strike. That’s the thing that guys need to 100 percent realize,” said Sherman. “You’re going to have to miss games, you’re going to have to lose some money if you’re willing to make the point, because that’s how MLB and NBA got it done. They missed games, they struck, they flexed every bit of power they had, and it was awesome. It worked out for them.”

Sherman’s comments come on the heels of NBA free agency that saw players inking deals totaling nearly $1 billion in the first 24 hours. That included record setting, mega-contracts extensions to James Harden and Stephen Curry.

Sherman has 2-years left on the 56-million dollar contract extension he signed with in 2014. He is an executive committee member of the NFL Players Association and player representative for the Seahawks.
