The Sehome High School football team will play an independent football schedule this year. The Mariners will play only three Northwest Conference teams, Lakewood, Anacortes and Bellingham in 2017.

Sehome will not play Lynden, Burlington, Sedro Woolley and Blaine this season. The independent schedule is part of a plan to increase turnout numbers for the Mariners football program that went 0-10 last year and has lost 17 straight games.

New Sehome football coach Kevin Beason told KPUG, “It’s a chance for us as a program to step away from that very rigorous 2A Northwest schedule and build up our numbers a little bit at Sehome and put a stamp on our program, identity and culture.”

Sehome is following the path of cross-town rival Bellingham High School. The Red Raiders played an independent schedule for two seasons before returning to the NWC in 2016 with larger team numbers going 4-and-6.
