The Bellingham Bells are excited to announce the addition of pitchers Jonathan Worley and Austin Weiermiller from Stanford University to the 2018 roster.
“We are thrilled to add a pair of Stanford Cardinal to the 2018 roster,” Bells’ general manager Stephanie Morrell said. “We have greatly enjoyed our relationship with Stanford in seasons past, and have come to find the student athletes they send us are not only talented competitors, but also fantastic teammates who represent our team well. We look forward to continuing this relationship again in 2018.”
Jonathan Worley is a six-foot five-inch pitcher who is originally from San Diego, Calif.
Last year was Worley’s first season at the collegiate level, but the right-hander missed the entire season due to Tommy John surgery.
Worley committed to the Cardinal after a very successful high school season at High Tech High School.
He was a four-year varsity starter and made three appearances on an all-league team.
Worley was also a two-time Under Armour Preseason All-American and was named to the Perfect Game California All-Region First team. Perfect Game ranked Worley as the eighth best right-handed pitcher in the state for the 2016 graduating class.
Aside from pitching, Worley was also the starting shortstop in high school.
“Jonathan is an exciting RHP who will add depth to our pitching staff,” Morrell said. “He’s had great success in his prep career, and we look forward to watching him grow and develop as a Bell.”
Joining Worley on both the Stanford and Bells’ pitching staff will be left-hander Austin Weiermiller. Weiermiller is in the midst of his first season on campus at Stanford.
The freshman is originally from Milton, Ga. and put up great numbers at Cambridge High School. He ended his prep career as the school all-time leader in career ERA, wins, strikeouts (328) and WHIP.
Aside from the career records, the lefty also holds many single season records and helped the Bears to the best season in program history with 25 wins in 2016.
“We are thrilled to have Austin Weiermiller joining the Bells,” Morrell said. “We know the fans will love watching Austin pitch this summer as he is an exciting young talent with a knack for getting guys out.”
Weiermiller also holds a unique distinction in the fact that he hurled a perfect game at the East Cobb Invitational in 2014.
It’s no surprise Weiermiller has found success in the sport of baseball as his father played basketball at Gettysburg College and his uncle, Mike, played professional baseball for the Minnesota Twins.
Both pitchers will look to make an immediate impact on a Cardinal team that is ranked ninth in the country by Baseball America to start the collegiate season.
