Former University of Washington and NBA star Brandon Roy has been named the new head coach of boys basketball at Garfield High School. Roy takes over the Bulldogs after leading Nathan Hale to an 29-and-0 undefeated season and a 3A state championship last season.
According to the Seattle Times, the move was confirmed by a source “with knowledge of the situation”. They also reported that Seattle Public Schools could not confirm the hiring.
The student run Garfield High Sports Twitter account tweeted out the news of Roy’s hiring Thursday afternoon calling it “official”.

Roy returns to his prep alma mater, a Garfield program that lost to his former team Nathan Hale in the 3A state title game in March. The Raiders, lead by number 1 prep prospect Michael Porter Jr., went 29-and-0 and won the mythical national championship in 2017. Roy replaces Ed Haskins, who took an assistant coaching job at Washington State University.
Roy made news last month after reportedly getting shot while attending a party in Southern California. The Associated Press reported that the former Portland Trail Blazer star was one of four people shot in Compton on Saturday, April 29th.
