BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Two members of the Western Washington University women’s rowing team have been selected as Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar Athletes for the 2018 season.

Angie Dexter and Ashley Yandt are first-time selections as CRCA National Scholar Athletes. To garner the elite academic award, rowing student-athletes must carry at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for their career (through the fall semester/quarter) for the current competition year. The student-athletes must also be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility and rowed in their institution’s NCAA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the season’s races

Dexter (Anchorage, AK/West Anchorage) and Yandt (Lake Tapps, WA/Bonney Lake) were fixtures for the Vikings during the national runner-up finish at the 2018 NCAA Division II Rowing Championships.

Dexter adds to her growing list of academic awards having also earned Google Cloud® Academic All-District 8 Women’s At-Large honors and was named the WWU co-Female Student-Athlete of the Year. A junior in the classroom, Dexter carries a 3.91 GPA while majoring in Spanish. She helped lead WWU’s fours to first place in the Grand Final at the NCAA II Championships rowing out of the stroke seat.

Yandt will graduate with a degree in psychology next week from WWU carrying cumulative 3.67 GPA. During her final year of eligibility with the Vikings, Yandt rowed primarily out of the four-seat in the eights, which finished 4th in the Grand Final of the NCAA II Championships. Following graduation, Yandt will be pursuing a master of arts degree in sport and performance psychology at the University of Denver

The WWU rowing program has had at least two student-athletes selected as CRCA Scholar Athletes every year since 2007.

With the national runner-up finish, WWU ended the season No. 2 in the nation in the final CRCA/US Rowing poll:
