BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University Junior Michael Butler has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week after tying for 9th place at last week’s SoCal Intercollegiate hosted by UC San Diego.

Butler (Sammamish, WA/Skyline) tied for 9th in the 60-player field finishing the 54-hole tournament at 5-over-par 221. Butler opened the competition with a 1-under-par 71, his 6th round of par or better during the 2017-18 season. His team-leading score helped WWU to a 6th-place finish in the tournament.

Butler has had a strong spring placing in the top 20 in all four of his tournament appearances, with a scoring average of 74.4.

He becomes the third Viking to earn GNAC Golfer of the Week honors this season, joining sophomore Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) who earned the award for Feb. 26-March 4 after finishing 2nd at the Bay Area Invitational and freshman Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) for March 12-18 after tying for individual medalist honors at the NDNU Argonaut Invitational.

Here is a look at Butler’s tournament-by-tournament results as he leads the Vikings and is 3rd in the GNAC with a season scoring average of 73.76 (+1.90 relative to par) while placing in the top 20 in each of his last four tournaments. The Vikings are currently in action at the Mustang Intercollegiate hosted by Western New Mexico at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
