PEORIA, Ariz. – Six Mariners pitchers combined to shut out the Los Angeles Dodgers, scattering 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9, in a 2-0 victory before a crowd of 7,504 on Sunday afternoon at the Peoria Sports Complex. It marks the
Mariners first Spring Training shutout since March 6, 2017 vs. Texas.
In his first start of the spring, Marco Gonzales stuck out 4 over 2.0 scoreless innings. He worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the 2nd by getting a groundball out from Yasmani Grandal and striking out Joc Pederson and Andrew Toles.
With one out in the top of the 3rd, Ben Gamel split the right-center field gap with a line drive and stretched it into a triple.
Two batters later, Gamel scored on a wild pitch for the Mariners first run of the afternoon. The Mariners added to their lead in the bottom of the 5th as Mike Ford led off with a double and scored on an RBI-groundout from Gamel.
After Gonzales’ 2 scoreless frames, Juan Nicasio came on in relief and allowed a leadoff double but bounced back with two groundball outs and a strikeout to keep the Dodgers off the board. Nicasio earned the win, his first of the spring. Edwin
Díaz worked a scoreless top of the 4th. Rob Whalen and Chasen Bradford each followed with 2.0 scoreless innings, with Whalen striking out 3 and Bradford striking out 1. Sam Moll earned the save, tossing a 1-2-3 top of the 9th.
Mariners 3rd baseman Kyle Seager went 2-for-2 at the plate. Kyle and his brother, Dodgers designated hitter Corey Seager, played against each other for the first time in professional baseball.
