Mariners shut-out by San Francisco

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners were blanked by the San Francisco Giants, 4-0, before a crowd of 8,230 on Thursday night at Peoria Stadium. Seattle was held to 4 hits: two from John Andreoli and one each by Guillermo Heredia and Zach Vincej.

San Francisco scored two runs each in the 2nd and 7th innings. Three of the Giants four runs were brought in on doubles from Trevor Brown.

Rob Whalen made his 3rd appearance, 2nd start, of the spring and allowed 2 runs (0 earned runs) on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3 in 3.0 innings pitched. He was charged with the loss and is now 0-1 in Cactus League play this year. Chasen Bradford followed Whalen in relief and tossed a scoreless 4th inning, striking out one. Juan Nicasio worked a clean 5th inning while fanning two. Edwin Díaz did not allow a baserunner in the 6th and struck out the final batter he faced. Ryan Cook allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2 in 1.0 inning of work. Max Povse tossed the final two frames of tonight’s game and walked 3 while striking out 1.

The Mariners (5-8-1) return to Cactus League action against the San Francisco Giants at 1:05 p.m. MT/12:05 p.m. PT at Scottsdale Stadium. The game will be broadcast live in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. The broadcast can also be streamed live on Mariners.com. Left-hander James Paxton is slated to start for the Mariners against Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzjia.
