Mariners shortstop Jean Segura placed on paternity list

The Seattle Mariners have placed shortstop Jean Segura on the paternity list. Gordon Beckham has been selected from AAA Tacoma, and John Andreoli has been designated for assignment.

Beckham (#1) will be in uniform and available for Friday’s game versus the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A player may be on the Paternity List for up to 3 days.

Segura, 28, is batting .314 (148×471) with 78 runs, 27 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs, 56 RBI,17 stolen bases and a .343 on-base percentage this season. Over his last 7 games (Aug. 9-current), he’s hitting .452 (14×31) with a double, a home run and 3 RBI. Among American League leaders this season, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound shortstop ranks 1st in hits, T3rd in multi-hit games (43), 5th in batting average, T7th in runs scored and 11th in stolen bases. He leads the Major Leagues with 18 games of at least 3 hits and has more multi-hit games (43) than games without a hit (30) this season. He was voted to his 2nd career All-Star Game (also: 2013 with Milwaukee) and finished 2-for-2 with a home run, 2 runs and 3 RBI.

The native of San Juan, DR, was signed by the Angels as an international free agent on Jan. 22, 2007.

Andreoli, 28, has had three stints with the Mariners this season: May 23-28, July 7-9 and July 20. Overall this season with the Mariners, he is 1-for-5 (.200) with 1 walk in 3 games. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners on May 23 at Oakland and went 1-for-3 with a walk while also making a sliding catch in right field to rob a base hit in the 8th inning. In 89 games with AAA Tacoma, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound outfielder is batting .287 (94×327) with 54 runs, 18 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs, 36 RBI, 55 walks, 19 stolen bases and a .397 on-base percentage. He was on the Rainiers disabled list from April 22 to May 2 with a sprained finger on his right hand.

Andreoli was signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent on Dec. 8, 2017. The Worchester, MA, native was drafted by Chicago-NL in the 17th round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Connecticut. In 8 minor league seasons (2011-current), he’s appeared in 773 games, hitting a combined .270 (745×2763) with 127 doubles, 44 triples, 37 home runs and 256 RBI with 247 stolen bases.
