SEATTLE, Wash. – The Seattle Mariners have announced the following roster moves: Ryan Cook, RHP has been selected from AAA Tacoma, and Christian Bergman, RHP, was optioned to AAA Tacoma. Cook (#46) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s game against the Detroit Tigers at Safeco Field.
Seattle’s Major League, 40-man roster is now at 39 players.
Cook, 30 (turns 31 on June 30), has appeared in 13 games with AAA Tacoma this season, going 0-1 with 2 saves and a 2.03 ERA (3 ER, 13.1 IP) with 17 strikeouts and 3 walks. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound right-hander has recorded a strikeout in 11 of his 13 outings, including five games with multiple strikeouts. He has limited opposing right-handed batters to a .172 (5×29) average against this season, while striking out 10 and walking 2.
Cook’s first outing with Seattle will mark his first Major League appearance since Sept. 16, 2015 when he tossed 1.0 inning in relief for the Red Sox at Baltimore. In 2015 – his last season in the Majors – he combined for 9 relief appearances with Oakland and Boston, posting an 18.69 ERA (18 ER, 8.2 IP) with 6 strikeouts and 7 walks. He was an American League All-Star with the Athletics in 2012, when he went 6-2 with 14 saves and a 2.09 ERA (17 ER, 73.1 IP) with 80 strikeouts and 27 walks in 71 relief appearances.
The native of Clovis, CA, signed a 2-year minor league contract with the Mariners on Nov. 14, 2016. He missed the entire 2017 season after undergoing “Tommy John” surgery on Oct. 20, 2016. Cook has appeared in parts of 5 Major League seasons with Arizona (2011), Oakland (2012-15) and Boston (2015), compiling a record of 13-12 with 17 saves and a 3.43 ERA (79 ER, 207.0 IP) while striking out 210 and walking 89. He was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the 27th round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of the University of Southern California. He made his Major League debut with Arizona on July 20, 2011 vs. Milwaukee.
Bergman, 30, made a spot start yesterday vs. the Texas Rangers and tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 5. He was selected from AAA Tacoma prior to yesterday’s game, where he was 3-3 with a 3.40 ERA (17 ER, 45.0 IP) with 41 strikeouts and 12 walks in 8 starts this season.
In 2017, Bergman made 13 appearances, including 8 starts, with the Mariners. He went 4-5 with a 5.00 ERA (30 ER, 54.0 IP) with 33 strikeouts and 15 walks. He also made 16 starts with AAA Tacoma last season, going 9-4 with a 5.34 ERA (51 ER, 86.0 IP) with 63 strikeouts and 18 walks.
Bergman has appeared in parts of five Major League seasons with Colorado (2014-16) and Seattle (2017-c), compiling a record of 11-14 with a 5.39 ERA (125 ER, 208.2 IP) with 128 strikeouts and 46 walks in 69 games (24 starts). The native of Glendale, CA, was originally selected by Colorado in the 24th round of the 2010 MLB Draft out of UC Irvine. He made his Major League debut with the Rockies on June 9, 2014 vs. Atlanta.
