Mariners place Dee Gordon on 10-day disabled list with fractured toe

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Seattle Mariners have placed Dee Gordon, INF, on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to May 21st) with a fractured right great toe. The M’s also called up Daniel Vogelbach, INF, from AAA Tacoma.

Vogelbach (#20) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:05 pm PT) game against the Oakland Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum.

In 24 games with the Rainiers this season, Vogelbach, 25, is hitting .301 (25-for-83) with 7 doubles, 9 home runs, 15 RBI and 22 walks with only 10 strikeouts. He has on-base percentage of .449 and is slugging .711 (1.159 OPS) in Tacoma. He hit .204 (11×54) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBI, 2 HBP and 7 walks in 19 games with Seattle after opening the season on the Mariners roster prior to being optioned to Tacoma postgame on April 25.

Vogelbach made his Major League debut with Seattle in 2016, appearing in 8 games in September. He was acquired from Chicago-NL on July 20, 2016 along with Paul Blackburn (rhp) for Mike Montgomery (lhp) & Jordan Pries (rhp). In parts of 3 seasons with Seattle, he is batting .191 (18×94) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 2 HBP and 11 walks in 43 games. Vogelbach was originally selected by Chicago-NL in 2nd round of 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Verot High School (Fort Myers, FL). In seven minor league seasons, he is a career .287 (718×2500) hitter with 389 runs, 150 doubles, 7 triples, 109 home runs, 453 RBI and a .392 on-base percentage in 693 career games. Vogelbach was a mid-season All-Star Selection in the Pacific Coast League and won the Rainiers Offensive Player of the Year Award and the Community Service Award in 2017.

Gordon, 30, is hitting .304 (56×184) with 25 runs, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 13 RBI, 16 stolen bases and a .330 on-base percentage in 45 games this season. He leads the American League, and is second in the Majors, in steals and is 10th in the AL in batting average. Over his past 20 games, he is hitting .337 (28-for-83) with 12 runs and 7 stolen bases. On Sunday, Gordon singled to lead off the 11th inning, stole second base and came around to score the winning run in Seattle’s 3-2, walkoff win.

He originally injured his right, great toe on May 9 in Toronto, and reinjured it in Sunday’s game versus Detroit (May 20).

The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder led the National League in steals last season while also ranking T2nd in hits, T3rd in triples, 4th in runs and 9th in games played. He hit .308 with 114 runs, 20 doubles, 9 triples, 2 home runs, 33 RBI and 60 steals in 158 games with Miami.

Gordon was acquired by the Mariners from Miami in a four-player trade on Dec. 7, 2017.
