Mariners lose to Cleveland

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Indians scored 11 runs over the first 3 innings and added 5 runs in the 8th inning as the Mariners lost to Cleveland, 16-3, before a crowd of 8,696 on Sunday afternoon at Peoria Stadium.

Cleveland plated a run in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd and broke the game open with 7 runs in the 3rd, including a grand slam home run off the bat of Yan Gomes. The Indians added 5 runs in the 8th inning.

The Mariners scored twice in the bottom of the 2nd, as Zach Vincej came through with a two-out, two-run single to score Ryon Healy, who walked to start the inning, and Mike Ford, who singled earlier in the frame. Seattle added a run in the 5th on Kyle Seager’s RBI-single.

Making his 5th appearance (4th start) of the spring, Rob Whalen allowed 9 runs (8 earned runs) on 8 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2 in 2.0 innings pitched. Minor league call-up Bryan Bonnell surrendered 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out
4 in 2.0 innings of work. Juan Nicasio tossed a scoreless inning, fanning 2. In his 3rd appearance of the spring, Nick Vincent allowed 1 hit and 1 walk but did not give up a run. Edwin Díaz retired the side in order in the 7th. Ryan Cook gave up 5 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 1 in 0.1 innings pitched. Minor league call-up Seth Elledge struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in 0.2 innings of work. Minor league call-up Michael Koval gave up 1 hit in a scoreless 9th inning.

The Mariners (11-12-1) return to Cactus League action tomorrow (Monday, March 19) against the Los Angeles Angels at 6:10pm at Tempe Diablo Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on 710 ESPN Seattle, the Mariners Radio Network and Mariners.com. Right-hander Christian Bergman is slated to start for the Mariners against Angels right-hander Osmer Morales.
