Mariners fall short to Cleveland, 4-2

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Aríel Miranda allowed 1 run in 3.0 innings of work and Tuffy Gosewisch hit his first home run of the spring, but the Mariners lost to the Cleveland Indians, 4-2, before a crowd of 2,615 on Wednesday afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark.

The Mariners plated the first run of the afternoon in the top of the 2nd inning as Taylor Motter drove an RBI-triple off the wall in right-center field to bring home Mike Ford.

The Indians evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI-triple of their own. Cleveland took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th on a 2-run home run from Melvin Upton, Jr. The Indians extended their lead to 4-1 with three straight two-out singles in the bottom of the 6th.

Gosewisch’s home run in the 9th inning provided the final tally of 4-2 in favor of Cleveland.

Making his 2nd start of the spring, left-hander Miranda allowed 1 run on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3 over 3.0 innings pitched. Juan Nicasio worked a scoreless 4th inning, striking out 1.  Edwin Díaz struck out 2 but surrendered a 2-run home run in his only inning of work. Ryan Cook made his first professional appearance since 2016 after missing the 2017 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Cook retired the first two batters he faced before allowing three consecutive singles; he allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 1.0 inning pitched. Mike Morin struck out 1 in a scoreless 7th inning. Sam Moll tossed a scoreless 8th inning.

The Mariners (2-4-1) return to Cactus League action tomorrow (Thursday, March 1) hosting the Kansas City Royals at 12:10 p.m. PT/1:10 p.m. MT at Peoria Stadium. with a home-road, split-squad doubleheader. The game will be broadcast (delayed) in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. The broadcast can be streamed live on Mariners.com. Right-hander Mike Leake is slated to start for the Mariners against Royals right-hander Burch Smith.
