PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners took early leads but were unable to protect them as the club was swept in home/road split-squad action against San Diego at Peoria Stadium and Kansas City at Surprise Stadium.
In the Mariners home game, James Paxton tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, and Jean Segura went 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI, but the Mariners lost to the San Diego Padres, 11-6, before a crowd of 3,029 at Peoria Stadium.
Dee Gordon led off the bottom of the 1st with a single and Segura followed with a two-run home run to left field. Seattle added another run in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead, as Ian Miller scored on an RBI-single from Segura.
San Diego, however, plated 5 runs in the top of the 4th, and never again trailed. Seattle got a run back in the bottom of the 4th to cut San Diego’s lead, 5-4, as Mike Ford scored on Miller’s RBI-single. The Padres added one run each in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings to stretch their lead to 8-4. Seattle answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th inning on a run-scoring wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Evan White. San Diego capped its scoring with 3 runs in the top of the 9th.
Paxton allowed 1 hit and 1 walk but did not allow a run over 2.0 innings in his spring debut. Marc Rzepczynski tossed a 1-2-3 top of the 3rd inning, striking out 2. Christian Bergman was charged with the loss, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits in 1.0 inning of work. Minor league call-up Michael Koval retired the Padres in order in the 5th, fanning two. In 1.2 innings pitched, Johendi Jiminian allowed 2 runs (1 earned run) on 2 hits and 3 walks. Minor league call-up Joe Pistorese allowed 1 run on 1 hit in 1.1 innings pitched. James Pazos worked 0.2 innings and surrendered 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk. Minor league call-up Matt Walker recorded the final out of the top of the 9th.
In the road game, Seattle scored 6 runs in the top of the first inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Mariners fell 14-9 in a loss against the Kansas City Royals at Surprise Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mariners jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring 6 runs on 4 hits. Braden Bishop led off the game with a double to right field and scored on Andrew Romine’s a 2-run blast to left field. Cameron Perkins recorded a 2-run single to right field and Taylor Motter drove in the 5th run of the inning on a double to left field scoring Perkins. Motter scored the final run of the inning on a fielding error.
Perkins, Motter and Chuck Taylor led the Mariners with 2 hits each, while Romine and Motter each drove in 2 of the team’s 9 runs. Overall the Mariners scored 9 runs on 13 hits, including 5 extra-base hits. Gordon Beckham hit his first home run of the spring with a solo blast to left field leading off the top of the 6th inning.
Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning, the Royals scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first, 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd and 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to take their first lead of the game, 12-6.
Andrew Moore made his first start of the spring, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 1.1 innings. He allowed a solo home run to Ryan O’Hearn and a 2-run blast to Soler in the second inning before exiting the game with only 1 out in the inning. Bryan Bonnell and Spencer Herrmann combined to allow 6 runs (4 ER) in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Anthony Misiewicz retired all 6 batters faced in the 4th and 5th innings before allowing a solo home run to Bubba Starling to lead off the 6th inning. Overall he allowed 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 3 over 2.1 innings in relief. Nathan Bannister (1.2,2,1,1,1,2) allowed 1 run in the 6th, while Darin Gillies tossed a 1-2-3 8th inning.
The Mariners (2-3-1) return to Cactus League action tomorrow (Wednesday, February 28) against the Cleveland Indians at 12:05 p.m. PT/1:05 p.m. MT at Goodyear Ballpark. The game will be broadcast (delayed) in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. The broadcast can be streamed live on Mariners.com. Left-hander Aríel Paxton is scheduled to start for the Mariners against Indians left-hander Mike Clevinger.
