Mariners claim LHP Dario Alvarez off waivers from Chicago Cubs

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners claimed left-handed pitcher Dario Alvarez off waivers from the Chicago Cubs Wednesday.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man roster is now at 38 players.

Alvarez will be optioned to AAA Tacoma and will report to minor league camp tomorrow, March 22.

Seattle’s Major League Spring Training roster remains at 38 players (30 roster players, 8 non-roster invitees).

Alvarez, 29, appeared in 7 games with the Cubs this spring, striking out 11 in 6.1 innings pitched while allowing 7 hits and 6 earned runs. He was 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA (16.1 IP, 5 ER) in 20 games with the Rangers last season and held opponents scoreless in 16 of the 20 appearances. His 20 games were spread across three separate stints (Opening Day-May 6, May 8-June 8 and June 16-July 2). He was 2-0 with a 2.33 ERA (27.0 IP, 7 ER) with AAA Round Rock in 18 games, including 1 start.

For his Major League career, he’s a combined 6-1 with a 5.06 ERA (48.0 IP, 27 ER) in 56 games, all in relief, with New York-NL (2014-15), Atlanta (2016) and Texas (2017). He’s struck out 61 batters in 48.0 career innings, an average of 11.4 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched.

Dario is 27-17, 2.92 (404.1 IP, 131 ER) with 2 complete games, 1 shutout and 5 saves in 181 career minor league games, including 45 starts. He was originally signed by Philadelphia and spent three seasons (2007-09) pitching in the Dominican Summer League before pitching in Japan, Venezuela and Panama from 2010-12.

A native of Santiago, Dominican Republic, he graduated from Liceo Herminia Perez High School.
