Mariners add Jim Brower to Major League coaching staff

SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and Manager Scott Servais announced today that Jim Brower has been added to the Major League coaching staff as Assistant Coach.

Brower, 44 (turns 45 on Dec. 29), has spent the past two seasons as the Chicago Cubs minor league pitching coordinator. Prior to joining the Cubs in 2016, Brower was the pitching coach for Northwest Arkansas, Kansas City’s Double-A affiliate, from 2013-15. He served in the same role for two seasons (2011-12) with Kane County, the Royals Single-A affiliate.

Brower compiled a 9-year Major League career, appearing with Cleveland (1999-2000), Cincinnati (2001-02), Montreal (2002), San Francisco (2003-05), Atlanta (2005), Baltimore (2006), San Diego (2006) and New York-AL (2007). In 354 career appearances, including 28 starts, he went 33-32 with a 4.67 ERA (298 ER, 574.0 IP) with 397 strikeouts and 256 walks. In 2008, Brower made 21 appearances with the Hiroshima Carp in the Japan Central League. From 2009-10, he pitched in the Venezuelan Winter League, the independent Atlantic League, the independent American Association and the Italian Baseball League.

The native of Edina, MN, attended the University of Minnesota before being selected by Texas in the 6th round of the 1994 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

The Mariners only current open coaching position is bullpen coach. Here’s a look at the 2018 coaching staff, to date:

Bench Coach – Manny Acta (1st year as Bench Coach, 3rd year on Seattle staff)
Hitting Coach – Edgar Martinez (4th year as Hitting Coach)
Pitching Coach – Mel Stottlemyre (3rd year as Pitching Coach)
Third Base Coach – Scott Brosius (1st year as Third Base Coach, 2nd year on Seattle staff)
First Base Coach – Chris Prieto (1st year as First Base Coach, 5th year on Seattle staff)
Bullpen Coach – TBA
Assistant Coach – Jim Brower (1st year as Assistant Coach)

In addition, Nasusel Cabrera will remain with the big league staff in a to-be-determined position.
